2nd & 3rd Grade
Our 2nd and 3rd Grade Loop:
For the 7/8 year old, second grade is a time of awakening awareness in the world around them. With that comes a year of discovering their independence in new ways and building confidence in the skills they have learned. The overarching theme of metamorphosis weaves through the year as we study the physical changes an insect goes through in its life cycle, explore the influence of Ancient cultures over time, the ways in which landforms change over time, and, finally, our landmark integrated unit about heroes, where we learn about the global changes heroes have made throughout history.
Third grade is the bridge year between the lower and upper loop. It is a year of continuing to build independence and fostering old and new connections in the classroom community. Students explore Ancient Greece and its influence on modern government; the Amazon Rainforest and its geography and climate; space, motion and matter. Additionally, students engage in community advocacy through water conservation studies and local improvement projects. During these studies, students build important academic skills and stamina by engaging in units with intentional arts integration that will lay the foundation for the upper loop. The highlight of the year is an empowering and transformative overnight outdoor education trip.
