Common Classroom Characteristics

At BCSIS, we strive to create aesthetically pleasing classrooms based on the understanding that people respond to their surroundings and can be more productive in certain settings. An aesthetically creative and beautiful environment can increase the productivity and well being of the students in that environment.

All teachers work to create a welcoming and focused classroom environment to help children concentrate and to cultivate each child’s aesthetic awareness through the use of:

• natural materials
• quality art supplies
•color, fabric, plants, and furniture to soften the environment
•math manipulatives to invite student participation in hands-on   learning and investigation
• chalk drawings to help a child’s imagination flourish and inspire children’s artwork
• materials which invite children to use all of their intelligences
• a nature area to honor a sense of wonder and respect for the environment
• materials and texts which display integrity and respect for people and cultures around the world
